NPNA will be holding its next General Meeting this week!  We have the pleasure of announcing that LBPD Patrol Resource Officer Ken Green will be joining us.  The main topic of discussion will be community watch.

All community members are welcomed and encouraged to participate in the discussion.  We hope to see you!

Your NPNA Board

HOPA is hosting a community meeting with Robert Garcia and representatives from LBPD on March 26th at 7pm at 727 Pine Avenue in the Bungalow Building Theater. All community members are welcome and we would like to have representatives from other downtown organizations present.

Please bring as many people to this meeting as possible to give power to Robert Garcia’s office and the PD to help change our neighborhood for the better and to reduce crime. We need the number of attendees to speak to the importance of this issue. If you have had a problem with crime in our neighborhood please write a letter to Robert Garcia to help make this a safer neighborhood. If you can not come to the meeting please email the letter to info@hopalb.com or board@northpinelb.com.

Meet the Candidates:

Originally from Northern California, Katie Gaston moved to Long Beach to
attend CSU Long Beach as a President’s Scholar, studying Organizational
Communication. Through her service in Student Government and administrative
task forces, Katie co-founded an organization promoting mental health awareness
and positive self-esteem. Now recognized on 3 CSU campuses, HeadSTRONG
encourages students to focus on self-care while engaging in their studies. Post
graduation, Katie’s civic engagement continued as she co-founded Rotaract
Long Beach, an organization providing opportunities for young professionals to
develop leadership skills while serving the downtown community. Among regular
volunteer efforts, Rotaract raised over $6,000 for charity through hosting the annual
Great Sand Sculpture Contest and provided over 50 clean-water filters to Haitian
families. Professionally, Katie works as an Operations Team Lead for Central
Desktop, a collaboration-software company based out of Pasadena, CA.

Weston LaBar graduated from the University of Vermont with a Bachelor of the
Arts in Political Science in 2008. He spent one year as a marketing director in the
private sector before entering the arena of public policy. From 2009-12 He lived in
his home town of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, where he held the position of Director
of Government Affairs to the Pocono Mountains Association of REALTORS® and sat
on over a dozen board of directors, overseeing a wide-variety of issues and sectors,
including the Monroe County Housing Authority and Monroe County 2020 Strategic
Plan Taskforce to name a couple. While with the REALTORS®, Weston ran the most
successful Political Action Committee in Northeastern Pennsylvania and gained a
reputation as being one of the most well respected visionaries in his vicinity. He
began private campaign and PAC consulting in 2011 with several communications
firms, before moving to Long Beach, California, and founding Political Advocacy
Consulting, Inc. in April of 2012. Weston secured contracts with several chambers
of commerce in Los Angeles County, including the Long Beach Area Chamber
of Commerce, to run the public policy and economic development arms of the
organizations to help advocate for business at the local, state, and federal level.
PAC, Inc. is a Public Affairs and Political Strategy Firm that works with pro-business
organizations, PACs, and candidates throughout the country.

1^st District Tree Planting

Date: February 2^nd, 2012

Time: 10am-1pm

Location: We will be meeting on 7^th Street between Locust Ave and Long Beach Blvd
Neighborhood Association: NPNA  (North Pine Neighborhood Alliance)

Description: We are planting 7+ trees to enhance the business corridor on 7^th in the NPNA Neighborhood.

2^nd District Tree Planting

Date:  February 9^th, 2012

Time: 9:30am – Finish
Location: We will be meeting at the parking lot on Broadway and Elm in the East Village
Neighborhood Association: EVA (East Village Association)
Description: We are planting approximately 25+ trees in the East Village within the 2^nd District Boundaries (Long Beach Blvd – Alamitos & North of Ocean Blvd – Third Street)

We want to encourage community members from different neighborhood associations downtown socializing (and planting) so, please feel free to come to one or both of our tree plantings no matter which neighborhood you live or do business in.  We also want to thank both the Vice Mayor Robert Garcia and Councilmember Suja Lowenthal and their amazing staff Lena Gonzales, Isaac Romero, Mark Magdelano, and Broc Coward along with the Neighborhood Resource Center for their partnership in helping make these tree plantings a reality!

About being a board member

• Board members must be a resident from the NPNA community (boundaries: Pacific Avenue to Long Beach Boulevard, 3rd Street to Anaheim Boulevard)
• Board members will serve for a 1 year term
• NPNA board meets monthly on the 3rd Wednesday of each month; membership meets quarterly on the 4th Wednesday of the given month
• Regular attendance at board and membership meetings is needed

Voting

• Voting will occur at the next membership meeting, scheduled for November 7th  (time and location are soon to follow).
• Floor Nominations/Write in candidates will also be accepted

Both the NPNA and the Downtown Residential Council support this development. We welcome the respectful use of our neighborhood architecture. Our local businesses will also greatly appreciate the many new professionals who will work out of this new development. Please join us at the Planning Commission meeting to ensure that Millworks may start to directly improve our neighborhood.
