K9 Corner Dog Park NOW OPEN!

Dog Park PTAfter much anticipation, NPNA’s K9 Corner dog park celebrated its grand opening on Sunday, September 27, 2009.  There were approximately 200 guests in attendance including Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal, Councilmember Robert Garcia, city officials, and area residents.  The opening featured a dog adoption and booths hosted by local businesses, such as: PetPartners, Soggy Dog, Petropolis, and PJ’s Pet Cafe.  Additionally, the Long Beach Beach Police Officers’ Association was on hand serving up hot dogs to the hungry crowd. After the ribbon cutting, roughly 50 dogs christened the park, along with their owners.

Located at the corner of Pacific Avenue and 9th Street, K9 Corner is NPNA’s inaugural “pet” project to transform an otherwise unused space in downtown into a fully sustainable, eco-friendly dog park.  K9 Corner features park lighting that is powered by solar panels, a sloped irrigation system for its drought tolerant landscape, and faux grass, instead of its water guzzling counterpart.

“We’re very excited for the opening of the dog park as it represents the culmination of over two years in planning and development in partnership with the city,” said Andreas Herr, one of the founding members of the NPNA.  ”K9 Corner represents a huge step in the right direction for our neighborhood.  We’re excited to show off what we’ve been working on.”

We look forward to seeing you and your pooches at K9 Corner!

Check Cashing Business Moratorium

Neighbors:

As you all know, we fought very hard to put in place a moratorium on new Check Cashing Businesses in our Downtown neighborhoods.  The City Council supported our proposal, and there is now a moratorium in place.  This is a positive development for our community.

However, before the council voted on the legislation, a check cashing business had submitted a proposal to open at 1100 E. 10th Street.  They were in the cue waiting for approval so they will be before the Long Beach Planning Commission on December 4th for a hearing.

I have talked to city staff and the council office and have made clear that we are AGAINST this new business.  Fortunately, both the city and the council office are supporting our position.  The city’s recommendation to the commission is to DENY the permit.

I will be at the meeting on the 4th representing us on behalf of the residents – let’s hope this is the last time we have to deal with a Check Cashing establishment.

Have a great Turkey Day,

Robert Garcia
NPNA President
