Neighbors:
As you all know, we fought very hard to put in place a moratorium on new Check Cashing Businesses in our Downtown neighborhoods. The City Council supported our proposal, and there is now a moratorium in place. This is a positive development for our community.
However, before the council voted on the legislation, a check cashing business had submitted a proposal to open at 1100 E. 10th Street. They were in the cue waiting for approval so they will be before the Long Beach Planning Commission on December 4th for a hearing.
I have talked to city staff and the council office and have made clear that we are AGAINST this new business. Fortunately, both the city and the council office are supporting our position. The city’s recommendation to the commission is to DENY the permit.
I will be at the meeting on the 4th representing us on behalf of the residents – let’s hope this is the last time we have to deal with a Check Cashing establishment.
Have a great Turkey Day,
